Eighth Army Veterans

ENHAM ALAMEIN

To drive through the village of Enham Alamein, one might be forgiven for thinking that there could be no more quintessentially English village.  But the fields in this part of Hampshire will forever be resonant of Egypt and the Eighth Army.

In the 1970's a group of veterans visited from the nearby Tameside Branch of the EAVA, including Doris and her husband George, to attend a memorial service at the church, St.Georges. With typical spirit, the veterans' day out seems to have culminated in an inpromptu football kickabout with local children.

Doris took photographs of the day, which we reproduce here with her permission.  She has also passed on several postcard sketches of St.Georges, drawn by A.Belshenko.
