Never Again The most over worn phrase in the
media these days is undoubtedly, “It must never happen again!"
There are slight variations, all meaning the same thing, "We must
make sure that something like this never happens again" or,
"Steps must be taken to make sure that this never happens
again!". These phrases are usually spoken, or written, as being of
a public demand, generally after some major disaster, particular kind of
murder, political scandal, a serious mistake or error of judgement;
sometimes it is just a fuel crisis lasting a few days or a bad spell of
defending at Old Trafford. They all imply that the present situation is
far from satisfactory and needs changing or tightening up considerably. When we ex-service people tell
you that a conflict like the Second World War must never happen again,
you could therefore be forgiven for thinking that you have heard the
message before. Our
compulsive desire to repeat the message is presented without apology.
Over 50 million people died in the Second World War.
We think they ought be remembered and we think there are still
relevant lessons to learn. In our small way, this Association wishes to make its contribution towards implementing that phrase, "We must make sure that nothing like this will ever happen again!". As the years roll on, those of us who are left have now grown old but we have still not yet wearied of the desire to ensure that youngsters hear what the war was like. After all, we were once young and boisterous too. Some of our members still visit schools to tell the children of the trials and tribulations that the wartime generation endured for six long years, and beyond. We hope that we are helping the children with their studies of the Second World War as they follow the school curriculum, and at the same time illustrating to them the realities and consequences of war with our eyewitness stories. This website is intended for anyone who will listen to us, regardless of their age, location or background. It will continue to be provided while ever there is a demand, and while ever we can still provide it.
